Atlanta Mission to Open their First Low-Barrier Homeless Shelter with Help from AEMI

On December 10, Atlanta Emerging Markets, Inc., in partnership with Invest Atlanta, closed a $5.5 million New Markets Tax Credit transaction with the Atlanta Mission to support Restoration House, a new $19 million shelter facility for homeless women and children.

Located off Northside Drive, this low-barrier homeless shelter for women and children will serve over 1,200 individuals by providing 100 new shelter beds and critically important wrap-around services, including job training, childcare, and healthcare to Atlanta's most vulnerable homeless population.

“Low-barrier” indicates that the shelter will accept all individuals as long as they are not a risk to themselves or others, whereas traditional shelters typically can only be accessed by individuals who meet restrictive admissions regulations such as sobriety, medication compliance, and identification.

Founded in 1938, the Atlanta Mission is the oldest and largest provider of support services for metro Atlanta’s homeless. The organization served over 7,000 individuals last year alone, including 248,000 nights of shelter, 657,000 meals served, 153 clients connected with employment, and 154 connected with permanent housing.
