A $50,000 brownfield clean-up sub-grant awarded to Remerge Inc., will help facilitate the reuse of a vacant historic structure on Auburn Avenue into a community asset.
The Invest Atlanta Board approved the grant for the nonprofit, which serves a vulnerable population that is underserved or threatened with displacement due to dysfunctional community structures, such as embodied racism, poverty, social isolation, environmental abuse and corruption.
The grant will help Remerge remediate 597 Auburn Ave., which includes addressing heavy metal impacts in shallow soil that otherwise risk exposure to the site occupants and neighboring community. Once complete, Remerge will use the property as offices and a job incubator space to support its goals.
Funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Brownfield Revolving Loan Fund helps finance the remediation of properties whose expansion, reuse or redevelopment may be complicated by the presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant.
